Donating Plasma Reduces PFAS

As a firefighter, you're consistently exposed to excess levels of PFAS - nicknamed "forever chemicals" because they do not break down in your body or in nature.

But a study done on Australian firefighters in 2019 has found a way for you to reduce the number of PFAS in your body.

They found out that donating PLASMA every 6 weeks significantly lowered PFAS level.

They followed 3 groups of firefighters for a year:

95 donated plasma every 6 weeks

95 donated blood every 12 weeks

95 did nothing.

The plasma group had a PFAS reduction levels- 2.9 ng/mL; 95% CI, –3.6 to –2.3 ng/mL; P < .001

The blood donation group has a PFAS reduction levels–1.1 ng/mL; 95% CI, –1.5 to –0.7 ng/mL; P < .001

The group that did nothing had no changes.

The results: donating blood and plasma showed a significant reduction in PFAS, with plasma donations yielding a quicker reduction result.
